The community takes its name from the Tamiami Trail (US-41), the historic road built in the 1920s to connect Tampa to Miami across the Everglades, which runs straight through the heart of the neighborhood. The area is almost entirely residential, with streets of single-family homes branching off on both sides of the Trail. Most homes are concrete block construction, built between the 1960s and 1990s, and a large share are owner-occupied by long-term residents.
The western edge of Tamiami borders Everglades National Park, making it one of the few suburban communities in the United States that sits directly adjacent to a major national park. Tamiami Executive Airport serves the community as a general aviation hub. Because Tamiami has no incorporated city government, all permitting and public services are handled at the county level through Miami-Dade. The community is predominantly Hispanic, and Spanish is widely spoken throughout the neighborhood.
